Mollie McKinley grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, prior to moving to NYC; she is a professor of metaphysics and ritual at The School of Making Thinking. She brings to light the irony of an empty swimming pool at LUMEN by using videos and images with settings containing bright beach balls and fishing nets. Keep reading →

Denise Iris was raised in Bucharest, Romania, and now resides in NYC, a professor at Columbia University and Swarthmore College. She is a filmmaker and digital media artist who enjoys creating works that transform everyday situations into more magical moments and often offer satirical commentary on modern life. She often blurs the lines between fiction, documentary, and poetical forms. Her films have been presented at various award shows and festivals and now reside in Harvard’s permanent collection.

What is “authenticity”? Ever since I have started researching Ethnic Foodways, I am constantly coming across this term. Why is that? For some reason people are obsessed with seeking the “authentic” food experience. Are we simply too nostalgic for our grandmother’s food or do we fear losing ourselves in this global world where ethnic boundaries are shifting too fast?
It wasn’t until I met Jose Landeros at his new restaurant Fiesta Poblana at 31 Corson Avenue on Staten Island that I began to get a grasp of why authenticity is important in foodways.
