CALL FOR SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS, EXPERIMENTAL VIDEO & PERFORMANCES FOR 2016 LUMEN FESTIVAL

Staten Island Arts, in partnership with Atlantic Salt Inc., is now accepting submissions from individual artists, groups, or organizations working in video, sound, new media, and performance interested in participating in LUMEN 2016.

DEADLINE:

The deadline to apply is midnight (EST) Friday, March 4, 2016.
 

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must be able to attend festival on June 25th if proposing a site-specific installation (A) or durational performance (C). Applicants submitting single-channel work (B) for video loop are required to submit completed video files by May 15, 2016.
 

Applicants are not required to be from Staten Island, though Staten Island artists are strongly encouraged to apply.
 

There is no entry fee to apply. All applications are ONLINE only. Do not submit hard-copy materials. They will be disqualified and not be reviewed. Applications are reviewed by a curatorial team and notifications will go out via email on Tuesday, March 15.
 

GUIDELINES & DETAILS:

LUMEN 2016 call is currently seeking applications for projects that fall into one of the following categories:
 

(A) Site specific Installation or Performance (up to 5 will be selected)
• Creation of new or adapted work proposed for up to 2 different locations (outlined on APPLICATION SITE MAP, sites A-Q)
• Projects that use, reference, and/or transform the physical location and/or possess an awareness of an audience.
• Artist required onsite to coordinate install & de-install.
 

(B) Single-Channel LOOP (up to 10 will be selected)
• Seeking experimental, single-channel media art
• Must have a total duration/running time of 10 minutes or less
• Conventional documentaries, fiction, or narrative features are NOT eligible
• Artist required to submit video to be considered for inclusion send mp4 file by May 15. Not required to coordinate install & de-install.
• Video submission will be featured as part of a projected video reel (approx. 10.5′x 14′screen, a 3000 Lumen Projector)
 

(C) Performance-Based LOOP (up to 10 will be selected)
• Total duration of 20 minutes or less
• Will be featured in a performance platform (“stage” area is approx. 10′x 15′)
 

Disclaimer: Final placement, production, and budget are at the discretion of Staten Island Arts
An artist stipend and tech budget are available to selected artists to help realize projects and compensate individuals for the creation of new work.
 

WORK SAMPLE REQUIREMENTS:

All applications must include a Work Sample, consisting of at least one of the following:
 
A) Up to 10 minutes of video. If you are submitting a single-channel video (B) you must submit the video you are proposing for inclusion in the festival.
 
B) Up to eight (8) digital images. Images must support Work Sample Video(s) if video is submitted.
 
WORK SAMPLE FORMAT GUIDELINES —>
 
– You may include both images and video in your Work Sample.
– ALL videos must be sent as a URL link from either Vimeo or YouTube.
– The URL link submitted MUST be for the individual work sample only, and not to your Vimeo page containing multiple videos.
– For help with Vimeo, visit the Vimeo Help Center and read the section on uploading.
– ALL images must be sent as ONE URL link. We recommend uploading all of them to the same place and sending us the link from a cloud-based site such as Dropbox. WORK SAMPLE FORMAT GUIDELINES —>
– There are areas in the application to include passwords if the links you send are private/password protected. Please remember to do so.
 

NOTES:

EVENT DETAILS:

LUMEN is a nomadic contemporary art experience in New York City featuring emerging and established artists. The goals of LUMEN are to connect artists with each other and the wider community. This annual event brings original visual, performance and installation art to new audiences, under the artistic vision of various curators from across NYC.
 
LUMEN 2016 will take place on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Atlantic Salt Company’s waterfront industrial warehouse and dock, a privately owned site that houses road salt throughout the year. Produced annually by Staten Island Arts, in partnership with Atlantic Salt. Curated by Monica Valenzuela.

About Monica Valenzuela

Monica Valenzuela is a grantwriter, arts administrator, and freelance photographer who specializes in storytelling, community-organizing, project management, and lifestyle portraiture. As the Deputy Director at Staten Island Arts, she works closely with the diverse cultural ecosystem of Staten Island and values neighborhood-based cultural activities. She enjoys identifying alternative spaces for art and working with artists to develop sustainable projects that identify or foster art into the public sphere. Notable projects include Staten Island Arts’ LUMEN festival, a cutting-edge video and performance art festival on Staten Island’s waterfront, and most recently Future Culture, in partnership with Design Trust for Public Space.
