About People Say
Staten Island Arts’ Folklife team proudly presents People Say: The Staten Island Sound. This new streaming series— broadcasting live from ArtSpace —brings together a diverse cast of talented musicians from across our borough at the invitation of local composer / drummer Dr. Darrell Smith. On the second Wednesday of each month, we’ll travel bridges connecting jazz, hip hop, Afrofuturism, classical, rock, pop, and funk—and forge some new paths along the way. First set’s at 7pm, second at 8pm. Plug in your best speakers, tune in, and catch a vibe.
June 9th lineup:
7pm: 13th Alibi, Ladibree (feat. DJ Goldgroove)
8pm: Hegazy, Ray Scro Dixieland Band
Poet: M.A. Dennis
About Tonight’s Performers
Hosted by dummer/composer Dr. Darrell Smith, People Say kicks off with 13th Alibi, a songwriting collective performing originals and covers. Theirs is an ever-evolving roster, and tonight includes J.D. Desharnais, Gardy Louis, Robert Kipp and Michael Kane and The TomCat Horns. Next up is Ladibree who, backed by DJ Goldgroove, brings high-octane, Missy-inspired energy from Harajuku’s Love Hotel scene back to her home borough. After intermission, we’ll return with Hegazy. Twins Omnia and Leila Hegazy mixed levity and sharp social commentary on their debut EP, Young, earning praise from The Deli and Pop Matters. They’ll be followed by The Ray Scro Dixieland Band which— featuring Kris Kaiser, Packy Lynch and Jerrold Kavanagh —builds on Ray’s decades of experience as an educator, composer, director, and bandleader. Our poet is writer, journalist, human rights advocate, and fast food connoisseur M. A. Dennis. Perhaps Shaolin’s greatest Dennis since Ghostface, his hilarious, heartbreaking works have been found in The New York Times, Newtown Literary, Prime Magazine, and others.
