About People Say

Staten Island Arts’ Folklife team proudly presents People Say: The Staten Island Sound. This new streaming series— broadcasting live from ArtSpace —brings together a diverse cast of talented musicians from across our borough at the invitation of local composer / drummer Dr. Darrell Smith. On the second Wednesday of each month, we’ll travel bridges connecting jazz, hip hop, Afrofuturism, classical, rock, pop, and funk—and forge some new paths along the way. First set’s at 7pm, second at 8pm. Plug in your best speakers, tune in, and catch a vibe.

July 14th Lineup:
7pm: Comfort Cat & Friends, Local Fish
8pm: Not From Concentrate, Jigsaw Youth

About the Artists

Hosted by drummer/composer Dr. Darrell Smith. People Say kicks off the first set with Comfort Cat, an Indie rocker so-named because it’s easy to pronounce and she’s obsessed with cats, accompanied by Jason Laney on keys. Next up is Local Fish, a hip-hop duo– artists Nü & Renaps joined forces and debuted in the Spring of 2021 and have been making a splash writing, engineering, & curating their own sound for an ironically universal experience. After a brief intermission, we’ll return at 8pm with Not From Concentrate, with SI natives Jaime Rails (guitar/vox) and Alan-Arthur Aurelia (bass) playing a sound they like to call ‘Skrunge’ – a mixture of grunge, punk, and ska, which they feel, despite what all the articles say, has remained very much alive and well. Closing out the night is Jigsaw Youth, an all female punk/grunge band that brings a new wave of raw distortion and elements of 90s alternative rock. It’s members include Maria Alvarez on bass and vocals, Nastacha Beck on guitar, and Alex Dmytrow on drums. Our Poet is Rocío Uchofen, a Linguistics and Literature graduate from Catholic University of Peru. Her first book Liturgias Clandestinas (2004) was published in Pontevedra, Spain, and has two more poetry books: El Oscuro Laberinto de los Sueños (Lima, 2011) and Geometría de la Urbe/Urban Geometry (Lima, 2019).
