A Book of Food & Lore

Food is life. Food is culture. It creates histories, connects communities, and nurtures souls. Every Plate Tells a Story explores Staten Islanders’ relationship to food through a multidisciplinary approach we like to call Food Lore. For the newest installment of the series, we’re collecting stories, recipes, photos, and histories, and you’re invited to get in on the fun. Selected works will be added to a new publication to be shared digitally in coming months. Selected participants will receive editorial support along with a modest honorarium.

To get started, just fill out this form.

Every Plate Tells a Story is a collection of programs produced by Staten Island Arts’ Folklife department exploring the ways in which the food we eat is inherently tied to our sense of identity, history, and belonging. The series is made possible by the generous support of New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo, Con Edison, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with City Council.
