Talking Drums
A three part folklife series that explored the aesthetics and communicative function of various traditional drum forms from the ethnic communities that make Staten Island home.

During the Spring of 2016 Staten Island Arts Folklife produced Talking Drums: Extending the Social Life of Traditional Drumming, a three part folklife series that explored the aesthetics and communicative function of various traditional drum forms from the ethnic communities that make Staten Island home. The series was comprised of three live concerts, each curated around a specific theme relating to rhythm and daily life, work, dance, and language. All shows were also professionally recorded and edited by Mauricio Bayona and Camilo Correa and shared via Staten Island Arts’ website and social media platforms in an effort to break with the ephemeral nature of public programs.
